5,700 tons of bitcoin miners
Huge shipments to the U.S. paved the way for bitcoin's hashrate surge
TheMinerMag published an intricate post this week that looked into the U.S. import records of bitcoin miner shipments by sea that landed in various ports over the past 12 months.
The key takeaway? January 2023 and September 2022 saw the largest amount of shipments that arrived in the U.S. with 1,490 and 873 tons in gross weight, respectively. Although the data only focused on the import records of one country, it’s still interesting to see how the bulk shipments paved the way for bitcoin’s network hashrate surge in the following month(s). It appears that the January shipment was so large that the hashrate growth continued well into March before slowing down in the past week or so.
Another analysis in the post focused on the breakdown of miner shipments by brand, i.e AntMiner, WhatsMiner, and Avalon. It’s no surprise that a majority of the identified shipments are Bitmain’s AntMiner S19 product line. But also interesting is that MicroBT shipped 888 tons of WhatsMiner parts to a U.S. manufacturing partner.
It appears that these import records will be updated on a regular basis, which can offer more color into the hardware market dynamics in the U.S. such as the activity of different shippers and consignees.
